SON Urges Manufacturers to Embrace Global Best Practices

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (S0N) has tasked local manufacturers to adopt global best practices in the production of local products, stressing that this was the only way Nigerian consumers would get value for their hard-earned money on the products.
The Director General, SON, Osita Aboloma, explained that the present administration is working tirelessly to create the enabling environment for local industries to thrive and remain competitive at the global market. Aboloma however, assured of the agency’s commitment to protect local manufacturers in the country, seeking the support of Nigerians to join hands with SON to combat the influx of fake and substandard goods in the country.
The SON boss said during the certificate presentation of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) to PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, in Lagos said the company has joined a privileged class of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) certified organisations and a trailblazer for others to follow on the requirement of this new standard, the milestone in the pursuit of service excellence ‎and business practice in line with international best practices remained commendable and worthy of emulation by all manufacturers and service providers in Nigeria, the SON boss asserted.
He said the company’s product is extremely important to Nigeria especially in the face of the prevailing economic challenges in the country and competitiveness in the market.
According to him, the on-going challenges continue to create and sustain opportunities for local content development in Nigeria.
He pointed out that the adoption of the ISO 9001:2015 QMS framework reflects the company’s vision to be a centre of excellence in the manufacture of soaps, detergents and other household products, leveraging on the best talents in Nigeria and internationally.
‎ He said the QMS approach provides a robust, globally recognised and acceptable solution to addressing the challenges associated with business and harnessing of opportunities.
“Achieving this certification is a demonstration of your management system conformity to internationally acceptable standard requirements and the ability of PZ Cussons Nigeria to get it right the first time and all the time.
Aboloma noted that the quest for excellence has no destination because quality remains a moving target while tasking the company ‎to keep the system health and up to date in order to reap the immense benefit of ISO approach to management.
In his words,”This system having been certified is placed on annual surveillance to ensure continuing suitability and effectiveness of the implementation of the QMS.”
He warned that in the course of the audit exercise, where non-conformances are observed and are effectively corrected within specified time frame, the system would retain the certificate, it would be withdrawn if the structures in place for certification break down and necessary corrective actions are not taken on observed non-conformances.
“Being one of the certified organisations in your chosen industrial sector in Nigeria, you will agree with me that the biggest challenge in this endless journey to excellence, is to direct your efforts towards service delivery for consistent customer satisfaction.
Earlier, the Chairman, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, Chief. Kola Jamodu, said the quality management system of PZ Cussons factories in Ikorodu and Aba were established on the strategic direction, culture and value of the organisation, stressing that the company has been, more than ever before, fully committed to manufacturing products that not only meet and even exceed consumer expectations.

he added.
He commended the Director General, SON for his relentless efforts in the massive seizures made in recent times while urging the Federal Government support SON to achieve its set goals. He noted with delight that the agency unrelenting efforts at sensitising the environment of substandard products through appropriate standards, monitoring and enforcement will be helpful to local industries.
In addition, he urged SON to ensure that only goods that meet the minimum requirements of the Nigeria Industrial Standards (NIS) are traded in Nigerian markets.
“Our association with SON has been historic. We are one of the pioneers that started dealing with Standards and quality regulators since the promulgation of the enabling act setting up the organisation in 1971. The company subjects its process to Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme ( MANCAP) and SONCAP,” he said.
He said with the certification, it ensures that the quality systems adopted, work to improve the business and are not just set of procedures that employees will find hard to manage. “It allows an implementation of more efficient working practices and focuses on the business objectives of the organisation, supports our staff and improves the levels of our customer satisfaction,” Jamodu, ex-Industry & Commerce Minister deposed.
