KLT CUSTOMS HANDS OVER SEIZED CABLE TO SON

A twenty foot container containing twenty million Naira worth of fire resisitant cables but falsely declared as regulators seized by the Nigeria Customs Service, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command, Apapa, Lagos was handed over to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria – SON, today in Lagos.

Handing over the container with number GLD09567059 to Engineer Makwe Mathias Chike, Assistant Director, Compliance of SON, the Customs Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Lami Wushishi, said the container was discovered to contain something at variance to what was declared under examination and was subsequently seized.

She said Made-in-Nigeria was boldly written on the label of the cable whereas it was manufactured and originated from China and has no any form of documentation or accreditation from any of the approved federal government regulatory agencies.

According to the CAC, “the electrical product which did not have any form of accreditation or documentation from any of the approved federal government product regulatory agencies, necessitated the seizure of the container by the command.”

Wushishi said the Nigeria Customs Service would continue to partner and maintain good relationship with other government agencies in its fight against smuggling and importation of substandard and fake goods and products into Nigeria.

Receiving the container, Engineer Makwe Mathias Chike praised the Customs for collaborating with SON in the fight against importation of substandard and fake products into the country.

He said the product would still be subjected to laboratory tests to determine its genuiness.

He assured Nigerians that SON under the leadership of Osita Aboloma as the Director General would not relent to get rid of fake and substandard products out of the country.

Meanwhile, the command has collected revenue of N7,392,442,266.00 in the past six months – January to June, 2017 – representing a 253.3 percent increment over the N2,092,671,108.00 collected in the corresponding period of the preceding year, 2016.

Elated Comptroller Wushishi urged importers, customs agents and all stakeholders at the port to comply with all extant rules and make truthful declarations in order to enjoy seamless clearance of cargo and avoid the wrath of the law.
